The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) has announced it has accepted the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission (LPC) and agreed to increase the National Minimum Wage from 1 October 2009.

From October
The adult rate for those aged 22 and above will rise from £5.73 to £5.80 per hour; for those aged 18 to 21 the rate increases from £4.77 to £4.83; and for 16 and 17-year-olds, the rate will go up to £3.57 an hour from £3.53. The increase in the adult rate represents an increase of 1.22%.

It was also announced that the government has accepted an LPC recommendation that the adult rate of the minimum wage should be extended to 21-year-old's. This will be implemented from October 2010.
